“hangingaround” is part of the programme of the European Capital of Culture Ruhr2010/ TWINS 2010
CRISIS OR VERY DAY LIFE - Pictures from now and here in Europe
„Hanging around in Europe“ in public or privacy did change during the last decades. The urban landscape of the European cities or the scenes we find in the private living-rooms all over Europe resemble each other more and more. The differences, once to be noticed travelling from country to country, vanish. To have the time to hang around is pure luxury for some Europeans, for others it’s just an expression of “the lack of work”.
But we are wondering:
What do people do when they are not working to earn money? How do they pass their time when they are not getting to their offices at 8 a.m.? What is their daily programme if the are not working in their shops, their garages, their factory? How do they look like when they are not dressing up for work?
They are hanging around?
They pass their time in the streets or at home doing nothing? They just linger about? Has this free time a special cultural meaning in differing European countries? Don’t we have to look on the time people pass doing nothing in a new way? Does the approach to time and “spare time” change as financial and economical systems break down and leave people without work? Are attendance halls stuffed with people or do people rather spend their “free time” in privacy? And what about the younger generation? What perspectives to life do they have?
And, don’t we actually need some “free time” from time to time to rethink our situation and to restart being creative?
“Time ain’t money but life!” might be the new approach, isn’t it?
