Having your hair cut in the Balkans is more a social event then anything else. In smaller towns it envolves meeting with you friend, staying there over hours, chatting, fervently discussing latest political events (there is hardly a more important topic), exchanging gossip (even among men), finding out the latest local news, sometimes drinking a coffee. This is especially practiced in sommer months, as a form of siesta.

zu Foto 21-23:

In the Balkan countries, old people are rather excluded from the social life. Their children, if they have any, have left in order to lead their own lives and most of the old people live alone and feel rather useless. Often they sit at their windows or on balconies, spend time in their gardens in fornt of their houses, just hanging around, not knowing what to do with their time. From their windows and balconies they observe what is happening on the streets, sometimes engaging in conversation with passer-bys. It is their way of trying to re-enter the social sphere and gein contact to younger people
